The Fort of Huy

The rocky outcrop overhanging the valley of the Meuse was from time immemorial regarded as strategic. An act of 890 evokes already the presence of fortifications on the site. During the history, the castle, "Li Tchestia" took more and more rise to become a powerful fortified town to the 17 E century, with its prolongations of the Strong Red, the Picardy Fort, the Strong Joseph and Sarte. The current fort was built with the assistance of the Dutchmen in 1818. As of May 1940 and during four years and half, it became execrable a bagne Nazi.

Seven thousand Belgians and foreigners were interned there. The Fort of Huy was one of principal "centers sorting" for the prisoners who were then forwarded to the camps of death. Today restored, it is a memorial of these dark years. The visitor will be able to see also there the well (12th century) of the old castle, restored under Erard of Marck (16th century).

But it will be more impressed by the memories of the universe concentrationnaire: rooms of prisoners, dungeons sinister, room of interrogation of the gestapo, laundrettes rudimentary. For better rendering comprehensible the price of freedom, the Museum of resistance and concentration camps present 150 didactic panels and about thirty windows gathered in eleven rooms of the Fort.
